I designed these bags for Pop&Scott to package their beautiful swings when sending them off to customers. The bag needed to be big and strong enough to hold a large, heavy hardwood swing but I thought it would be great if it could somehow be made small enough to be used as an everyday tote. So I came up with this design which folds into itself. These bags are a slightly smaller version of that original design.

When folded the bag is a great, roomy shopping tote, but extended to full height the bag is large enough to take everything you’d need for a weekend away.
Sewn with heavy duty 10 oz natural cotton canvas using durable french seam construction on my trusty 1956 Singer 201K named Madeleine. The bags have double folded canvas handles on the bottom and strong cotton twill handles at the top.
Hand dyed by me using natural indigo (from the legume plant Indigofera Tinctoria). Each bag is submerged several times in the indigo vat to build up the depth of colour. As these bags are hand made each one is unique and the dye pattern will vary slightly.

Dimensions (folded): 33cm high x 37 cm wide.
Dimensions (full height): 60cm high x 37cm wide.

Available now in THE SHOP.

Thankyou everyone for coming along to the St Kilda Town Hall on World Environment Day for my natural indigo workshop as part of the Creative SustainAbility Event, it was lovely to meet so many new people, it was frantically busy but heaps of fun, I went home and fell into bed completely exhausted!
Erica kindly agreed to let me share these photos of the beautiful top she dyed on the night (and her gorgeous baby belly!) She runs a great site on recycled fashion, pop on over and check it out here: www.recycled-fashion.com.

And we had another great class at Pop and Scott on Sunday, one participant went home in her socks after giving her old canvas shoes a new lease of life in the indigo vat! Thank goodness for Scotty’s wood heater which kept us cosy while we worked. The next workshop will be in August, date to be announced. Currently working on a few new designs for the shop too, busy, busy.

Natural Dye Class with me at Pop and Scott Workshop

“The age-old craft of applying colour to textiles with natural dye stuffs has been experiencing a bit of a resurgence of late. Myf is pretty happy about that because she goes a bit nuts when it comes to natural dyes. Come and learn the basics of natural dying and resist techniques. Learn how to identify plants in your garden that are safe and useful for dying. Experience the magic of indigo. Be inspired by the beautiful and meditative practice of colouring cloth. Over the course of three hours you will create your own unique wearable and functional pieces to take home using natural fibres such as silk, linen and hemp. Participants will also take home a solar dye kit and seeds to create their own dye garden.”

Sunday June 16th 2013. $160 (Max 10 per class). Email: info@popandscott.com
Nibbles and drinks provided. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear (closed toe shoes and clothes that won’t be ruined by an accidental dye spot!) All tools, materials and aprons will be provided.

My last proper post here was in December. Sorry for the silence. 2013 has been a pretty rough year for me so far, I have lots of new things in the pipeline for the shop but am having to take my time while my energy is required elsewhere. I did manage to hold my first dye class at the workshop last weekend. It was so much fun, I’ll be adding more dates soon. And I have a post on natural dyeing up at the Handmaker’s Factory today, head on over there for loads of crafty goodness.
